Abdominal Actinomycosis

Abstract
Actinomycosis is still a relatively rare infection. Although abdominal actinomycosis makes up only 18 to 22 percent of the infections with actinomyces, it's characteristics of abscess formation, drainage sinuses, abundant granulation tissue,
dense
fibrous scar tissue makes the surgeon to face difficulty in diagnosis and proper treatment.
In most instances, the onset of abdominal disease is preceded by an inflammatory or traumatic incident that result in the perforation of the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract.
The involved areas are usually granulomatous, markedly indurated, and relatively avascular in the region of the active growth of the actinomyces.
Therefore intensive and prolonged antimicrobial therapy, and wide surgical excision of involved tissue are two general principles of therapy.
We present a report of four patient with brief review of literatures.
